What Motivates You?

"Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it."
-Oprah Winfrey

I love this quote, and not because Oprah says so; but there is no truer statement. And it really applies to everything, not just running. Not too long ago, I had heard another phrase along those very same lines, that I try to apply on a personal level; “if you don’t commit to your workout, bring it up a notch and push yourself, your body will not know to change” Amazing, how inspiring a few words can be to someone.
Over the summer, I had found myself needing more motivation; and thankfully, we have many opportunities to get out there and participate in so many different activities. Goal-setting is probably one of the biggest motivating tools you can use. Try this, set yourself with a personal goal, start small and "own" it...commit yourself to it 100%, and once you have achieved it, reward yourself! Then do it again!
Whether these are goals relating to sports, activities, health, or just general living; if there is something out there that appeals to you, make it happen; make it a reality and commit to it.
Speaking of committing to a goal, The Royal Victoria Marathon training program is into its final 4 weeks of long runs. Good luck to those ORCA members that have committed to their workouts and are well on their way to a successful run on October 12th! We will be cheering you on!

See you out there!

Top Ten Signs That You're At A Runners' Party

10. As you walk up the driveway, you hear a group of people on the front lawn shouting, "You're almost there! You're looking good!"
9. The house is roped off into various sections. You're asked not to enter a section containing runners who are expected to finish partying before you.
8. You hear a gunshot and run for cover, then realize that it was only the starter's pistol announcing the official beginning of the party.
7. At the bar is a group of people shouting, "Jell-O shooters on the right, Margaritas on the left!"
6. Every so often you hear a heart monitor start to beep. Following this, you hear someone say, "I'm going anaerobic-can we do a slow dance now?"
5. Several people leave just as things really start buzzing. They explain on the way out that they aren't there for the full party; they're only doing the half.
4. The host announces that it's time to play a party game, and everyone hits the deck and starts stretching in preparation.
3. The cute girl that you met at the bar invites you to follow her and says that you won't be disappointed with what she has to show you - and you aren't, when you see that brand new, high-tech treadmill in the exercise room.
2. The midnight buffet table contains muffins, yogurt, apples and Exceed. The host puts an "X" on the back of your hand with a black magic marker so that you can't sneak back for seconds.
1. Instead of using the washroom, males go outside to find a shrub or bush, preferably something in the middle of the yard.
