EDITORIAL

Love the fall, the mist and all...

Days are certainly getting shorter, before we know it summer has come to an end and fall is here. I know this is probably sounding like a broken record, but please use extra caution while running in the evening. Be sure to wear reflective, light colored clothing and if you must run alone, tell someone the route you will be taking. Practice "safe" running.

I would love to take this opportunity to say Good Luck to the ORCA's heading to the Royal Victoria Marathon, Half Marathon and 8km Races on the Thanksgiving long weekend. Our club has always had a good turnout for this fun-filled weekend.

The club membership is now 154 members strong and it is always a pleasure to meet new people who share the same love of this sport. All members should check out our new website for weekly runs, calendar of races and our always expanding photo gallery. If you have any photos from races/events, especially the ACTION shots, please send them to Ken Peters, our web master. There is more information below on how to do so. We would love to see them and share in your experiences. Likewise, if you would like to submit an article on an event in which you've taken part.
See you out there!

SEPTEMBER ARTICLE

The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) recommends the following safety guidelines for runners.
DO take a self-defense class from a well-qualified instructor.
DON'T run with headphones. They will make you less aware of your surroundings and put you at greater risk for injury, accident or attack.
DO run with your dog, if possible.
DON'T run the same route every day.
DO tell someone your running route before you leave, and the estimated length of time you'll be gone.
DON'T run after dark, but if you must,
DO run with a partner.
DO carry a quarter. (change or a cell phone, rwc) In case of an emergency, you can call a friend.
DO wear reflective clothing or running gear when running at dawn or dusk.
DO run against traffic.
DON'T run in unpopulated or unfamiliar areas.
DO carry identification (with your name, phone number and blood type).
DON'T wear jewelry.
DO ignore verbal harassment.
DO use your intuition about a person or an area.
DO practice memorizing license tags or identifying characteristics of strangers.
