HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Well, here we are in the final month of 2008. It won't be long before we are making our resolutions for 2009! This year has definitely passed quickly.
Is anyone out there looking for some great cross training options during the winter? A few of us have been out with the Aqua Terra Triathlon club for their indoor fall/winter spinning sessions on Tuesday evenings. Cycling is a wonderful complement for running. And the nice thing about this club, is that you don't have to be a triathlete to join. Bonus: It's really quite fun! For more details, contact Rob or Kim Williamson by email
The Comox Half Marathon training has started and that is always a nice goal race. There are generally quite a few ORCA in attendance. It is Race #6 of the Frontrunner's Vancouver Island Series, which consists of eight races in various island locations. If you commit to all races and run, they offer 50% off the race series for the following year...VERY NICE!
I certainly wish you and your families a joyous holiday season and hope to see you all out for the Annual Christmas Lights Fun Run. It will be the social event of the season! The details are posted on the web page and in this newsletter.
See you out there!

DECEMBER ARTICLE
Seeking Race Committee
Our Orca Club would like to establish a race commitee so we are looking for enthusiastic members who would like to join at the ground floor.
Once upon a time, we had been race #9 of the Island Series, and while we may not become a part of the series again; it would be nice to have a local event to call our own!
Any interested members should contact our president, Rod Bailey either by email email or phone 250-240-2331.

KEN OWEN AWARD - 2008
The Ken Owen Award for the Most Inspirational Orca is presented annually to an Orca member who, through their dedication and tenacity, has been an inspiration to the club; not the fastest or the one winning all the prizes, but to a person who embodies the spirit of Ken.
This year's recipient is David Beatty. David is one of the original Orca members, and a person who promoted the joy of running in Oceanside long before the idea of ORCA club was even hatched. His Sunday runs have been a long standing tradition for community runners. No runner, no matter how slow their pace, is left behind on a Sunday run.
David's famous "loop" echoes through the trails of the beautiful and interesting runs he selects each week. David, along with Heather, his wife and running partner, open their warm home for delicious brunches and lively conversation many weekends.
Following are some of the comments recieved by club members with regards to this year's recipient:
"David's dedication and enthusiasm has kept many a runner going over the years."
"David has a very inclusive attitude to making the Sunday runs a fun experience for all.
"Ken was present at most Sunday runs, not necessarily running, but often biking.
Ken would be very happy to know that David was receiving this award, not only because Ken was a dear friend of David's, but because David represents everything that Ken beleived in: camaraderie, encouragement, dedication and tenacity.
Congratulations David!
